SA's richest multisport Series:
The Western Cape round of the R300,000 Momentum Health i-Flex National Duathlon Series took place last Sunday at the Zevenwacht Wine Estate near Stellenbosch. When we said this offroad round was a mountain biking paradise and competitors could expect some challenging climbs and descents, we weren't kidding. Duathletes were treated to a stunning course taking them high up into the vineyards.

Bookazine: South Africa's first triathlon bookazine, Beginner's Guide to Triathlon will be on shelves on Monday, 23 May.

From triathlon to parliament:
We have always thought that triathletes are a rather clever bunch. Finnish Ironman legend Pauli Kiuru was elected to parliament in Finland's recent elections. Kiuru competed in Kona for 12 years, and is perhaps best known as the first person to seriously jeopardise the American dominance of the sport up until 1994. www.lavamagazine.com

Where it was a day to remember for Switzerland's Nino Schurter and China's Chengyuan Ren, it was a day to forget for South Africa's Burry Stander (left, photo by Craig Dutton) at the UCI mountain bike World Cup in Pietermaritzburg last Saturday. EGO: Go Multi rebrands

Our humble apologies. A gremlin prevented the Twitter link from working in yesterday's EGO.

Welcome to EGO, Go Multi's fortnightly electronic newsletter.

We hope none of you fell for our beefy April Fools joke on Friday. Why would we sell Go Multi to a Texan cattle tycoon? What isn't a joke is the fact that we really are rebranding, starting with our May/June issue. The bold new logo is to mark Go Multi magazine's seventh year in existence. The new design puts strong emphasis on the 'Go' call to action of our name. The simple but powerful 'play' icon in the 'o' reflects the dynamic world of multisport, with nine distinct endurance sports.

SA's richest multisport Series:
The next round of the R300,000 Momentum Health i-Flex National Duathlon Series is taking place next Sunday at the Zevenwacht Estate on the Stellenbosch Wine Route. Most of South Africa's leading duathletes have confirmed they will race on Sunday 17 April. This is an offroad round and in this mountain biking paradise, expect some challenging climbs and descents. We hope to see you there.

Bookazine: We have unfortunately been delayed in publishing South Africa's first Beginner's Guide to Triathlon bookazine. It will be on shelves on Monday, 16 May.

Website:
Site maintenance downtime: Go Multi's site www.gomulti.co.za will be offline for maintenance today from 3:30am-5:30am (Thursday 7 April).

Virgin Active's product and training manager Fran Venter has been diagnosed with brain, liver and lung cancer. This isn't stopping her from running the Virgin London Marathon for the Ma’Afika Tikkun Charity. Follow Fran's progress with her blog on www.gomulti.co.za every two days.

News:
South Africans have a top new triathlon to look forward to later this year, Challenge Cape Town. The iron-distance race (226km) is part of the Challenge Family series that features 13 races across three continents, including the world’s largest iron distance triathlon, Challenge Roth in Germany.

Burry Stander has become the first South African to win the grueling Absa Cape Epic 707km staged MTB race in the Western Cape. He along with teammate Christoph Sauser of Switzerland competed under the 36ONE Songo Specialized name and dominated the race.

EGO: Run and bike your way to fitness

We know we have been quiet! The team have been hard at work putting the latest issue together. We know you'll enjoy it when it comes out in just over a week.

The multisport world is growing by the day as people see the benefits. This weekend sees the start of the Momentum Health i-Flex National Duathlon Series, SA's richest multisport series. Next weekend the Midlands Ultra Triathlon takes place at Midmar Dam in KZN. The event doubles as the SA Long Course Triathlon Championships. Let's not forget that Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa will soon be upon us too.

All the best for the month ahead.

What's a steady ride anyway? Asks Deon Braun
Recently I did a long steady distance (LSD) road ride with a bunch of old pals and some new ones. It was interesting to see the different approaches of riding. Some were pushing the uphills like you'd expect in a race, trying to drop those behind. Then they'd freewheel the downhills and everyone behind them would be riding on their brakes. So it was a long ride but it was anything but steady!

My advice, if you want to improve your cycling workout by 20% or more next LSD ride? Click here

Duathlon is back with a bang:
South Africa's mega duathlon series, the R300,000 Momentum Health i-Flex National Duathlon Series, kicks off this weekend at the Waterfall Country Estate in Johannesburg.

Website:
Follow multisport newbie Ralph Kujawa as he gets triathlon fit with the Sports Science Institute. There is more to it than you think.

If paddling is your thing, you will be interested in all the links we have just posted in our Start Canoeing section.

News:
The Abu Dhabi International Triathlon happens in 16 days and is completely sold out. The 12 March event boasts the best pro-field outside of Ironman Hawaii with 24 triathlon and duathlon world titles among them. Deon Braun will be there covering the action and taking part himself.

Hi-Tec's Liquid Mountaineering viral video has won an award at the inaugural Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards in Johannesburg.

New MTB stage race:
Namib Quest = 500km, 1-6 May, Windhoek to Walvis Bay

Next issue:
The March/April issue of Go Multi will be on the shelves countrywide on 7 March. In your multisport fix you will find a feature on Reunion's Grand Raid - Diagonal of Fools, one of the top trail runs in the world. EGO:

How we multi: Abu Dhabi International Tri, surfskis and death wishes

Deon Braun is heading east in March for the Abu Dhabi International Tri (12 March).

"It has a 200km bike in it, so I'm starting to crank up some long steady miles. It's a little late for major distance in the legs but I have muscle memory from nearly 10 years of road cycling in my thirties," is all he's prepared to say.

He's scared, we can smell it! And now he thinks surfski paddling will help him. What a multisport kluts! Or is there method in his madness?
http://www.gomulti.co.za/blog-deon-braun/abu-dhabi-international-tri-surfskis-and-death-wishes
How we multi: Mile Mania

Hugh Pines is heading up the road to Howick for the Midmar Mile on 12 and 13 Feb and he is forging on with his swim training. "Covering the mile (1.6km) is equivalent to 32 lengths of our local pool. I haven't reached that in one session yet but I'm getting there." He's also scared but we can't smell it yet.

Below are a couple of tips to help you prepare for your next open water event:

Get kit comfortable: Don't try a new pair of goggles for the first time at the race. Train with them for at least a couple of weeks leading up to the event.

High elbow recovery: Even dams can have small waves and chop. Practice getting your elbows high enough above the water on your recovery swim stroke.

He hasn't neglected his running though, trying to get at least three runs in a week. On Friday he is hitting the trails in the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve.

Latest issue

If you are doing the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, our Jan/Feb issue includes bunch riding tips from Nic White to sharpen your skills in this vital aspect of road riding. It could save you minutes and ensure a safe armchair ride to the finish. Have a great ride!

Have you ever wondered: Why multisport events usually finish with a run?

It's simple. A finish on the bike would be dangerous because of sprinting and would also create problems with timing. A swim finish is even more dangerous because of hypothermia where fatigued athletes would enter cooler water. Swimming is arguably the toughest leg so there is also the risk of drownings because of fatigue.
